It is with great sadness that we announce the death of William E. Murray of Hagerstown, Md. He departed this life and went to meet his Lord on Monday, Dec. 10, 2012. Bill was a devoted husband and loving father and grandfather. He was born June 9, 1928, in Big Pool, Md., to the parents of Rev. William F. and Bessie Murray. He is survived by his beloved wife, Rayetta Marie (Bloyer) of 63 years and loving daughter, Tammy Murray Lewis; son-in-law, Robert Lewis Jr.; and the love of his life, granddaughter, Katlyn (Kay Kay) of Sylvania, Ohio.

Bill is also survived by special nephew, Randy Murray (Cheryl); and special great-nieces, Stephanie, Natalie and Ashley Murray. Surviving are loving brothers, Rev. Bennett Murray (Darlene), Edgar Murray (Eva), James Murray (Dixie); and sister, Connie Jenkins of Baltimore. He is survived by a sister-in-law, Margaret Hose and brother-in-law, Charles Bloyer. He is survived by many wonderful nieces and nephews.


He was blessed with many friends and special neighbors.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Homer Murray, Stanley Murray and Lowell Murray; sisters, Charlotte Tucker and Genevieve Jenkins.

Bill attended Big Pool School and Clear Spring High School. He served in the first Calvary division in Japan and served during the Korean War. He was employed by Fairchild Aircraft until its closing and he retired from Ogden Foods. He and his wife operated Stephanie’s Café in the city market for many years. Bill had many memorable events throughout his life; a special one was when his father and brothers walked the C&O canal for eight days from Cumberland, Md., to Washington, D.C., in the 1950s.

Bill attended and was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Hagerstown. He is a member of the Men’s Friendship Sunday School class. He was a member of Elks Lodge 378 and Funkstown American Legion.

He is best remembered for his quick wit and humorous personality. Many enjoyed listening to his stories and wisdom. Bill loved listening to music and always began his day singing. He had a love for old cars, Andy Griffith re-runs and the good old days.

There will be no viewing.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Dec. 14, 2012, at 1:30 p.m. at the Grace United Methodist Church, 712 Church St., Hagerstown, Md. Rev. Clark Carr and Rev. Bennett Murray will officiate. Interment will be at Rest Haven Cemetery.

The family would like to thank Hospice of Washington County for the wonderful and loving care he received while at home and the outstanding patient care of Dr. Girish Reddy of Hagerstown Heart.
