Nationally ranked Paul VI pulls away from Goretti

BOYS BASKETBALL

HYATTSVILLE, Md. — Marcus Derrickson scored 18 points and Franklin Howard added 11 as Paul VI pulled away from St. Maria Goretti in the second half for a 57-43 victory on Sunday at the National High School Hoops Festival at DeMatha High School.

Paul VI (2-1) — ranked 16th in the nation by both ESPN and USA Today — was led by its two sophomores. Derrickson, a 6-foot-7, 225-pound forward, added 11 rebounds.

Goretti (5-4) trailed by only one, 23-22, at halftime. But Martin Geben, who finished with 10 points and four rebounds, sat with foul trouble in the third quarter and the Gaels were outscored 22-12 in the period.

Tyrus Fleetwood led Goretti with 16 points.
