Mail Call - Dec. 10

December 09, 2012

“Regarding the front-page Herald-Mail article of Wednesday, Nov. 28, ‘Panel favors county salary hike,’ I vehemently disagree. If the increases are based on recent performance, other than sheriff and county treasurer, the wages should be frozen at current levels, not increased by 16.7 and 21.2 percent. Millions of taxpayer dollars have been wasted by poor land and white elephant building investments that sit basically unoccupied for years. Taxpayers unite, speak out. Performance equals raises.”
— Fountain Head

“Taxpayers in Washington County and Hagerstown, it’s time to wake up and call your local delegates. They want to hear from you, so give them a call. What I am pressing for is, I am against these salary recommendations for the county commissioners, the BOE, and everybody else on that list. Where these people are coming up with these percentage increases, it is outrageous. Now they’re asking high, figuring they’ll settle on a low increase. It’s not needed, it’s not wanted. Call your legislators and tell them ‘no.’”
— Hagerstown

“Can I tell you what I think is crazy? You have these Republican congressmen, make a pledge to the people of the United States of America, then later they take a pledge to the Republican Party, which overrides their pledge to the citizens. In my opinion, that’s treason. And who the heck is this Grover Norquist? ... not even a politician, have all this control over the Republicans. It’s all crazy. Why do we put up with it?”
— Hagerstown

“I was just passing through, and I see where the gas in Washington County must be better than anywhere else, because it’s priced more than everywhere else. I’d say you buy your gas either on the east side of the mountains, or go to the west side, where it’s a little bit cheaper.”
— Hagerstown

“I can’t believe so many of you people, especially Democrats, really do not like John McCain. That man served nine years in a prison camp in Vietnam, so you would have the right to criticize him and hate him like you do. So I think you really should love him instead of not liking him. He’s probably a bigger American than you’ll ever be.”
— Sharpsburg

“To all of you President Obama fans who keep telling the rest of us the election’s over, get over it: We have the same right to voice our opinion as you did, and are still doing, about President Bush. So if you don’t like hearing what we have to say, get out of here. We have freedom of speech.”
— Hagerstown

“The Republicans are at it again. Now they’re blocking President Obama from taxing the people who make over $250,000, even though the people have spoken, in the re-election, and Obama did not hide this as part of his agenda. And now they think because they own the Congress, they can block it again, even though they lost eight seats. I don’t understand their behavior. They weren’t nationally elected, they were last elected by their districts in their home states. National referendum was on raising the taxes on the wealthy.”
— Hagerstown

“Here’s some pleasant news for the Mail Call, for a change. Go to the Smithsburg library to see their Christmas tree. It’s really beautiful.”
— Smithsburg

“Why do you give Allan Powell so much space in the newspaper? He’s so far left, he’s out of the mainstream by half a mile.”
— Brightwood Acres East
