'The Christmas Star' to be presented by Rodney Martin

Rodney Martin, retired planetarium educator, will present “The Christmas Star” at Discovery Station on Saturday at 2 p.m. as part of its Saturday Plus program.

There is no charge for the Saturday Plus presentation. There is an admission charge for the full museum tour of two floors of hands-on exhibits.

The Treasure Gift Shoppe is open Tuesday through Saturday from  10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with gifts from 50 cents to $50. Annual family memberships and gift certificates are available.

Discovery Station is at 101 W. Washington St. in Hagerstown.

Night of Lights set for Saturday

On Saturday, the Locust Point Neighborhoods 1st group will light 400 luminarias at the gateway to the neighborhood in front of the Locust Point Market as a holiday greeting to neighbors and friends.
 
The group will begin lighting the candles at dusk. 

On Tuesday at 7 p.m., the group will meet in the meeting room of Congregation B’Nai Abraham at 53 E. Baltimore St. (rear entrance). The group will be assembling the 400 luminarias for the Night of Lights event on Saturday.

Shredding event raises $378 for animal shelter

A Better Shredder held a benefit for the Humane Society of Washington County  on Nov. 17 at the Williamsport Moose Lodge.

Attendees brought up to four boxes of paper to be shredded and were asked to make a donation to the animal shelter.  Three tons of paper was shredded during the event and more than $378 was raised for the animals at the shelter.

The event was organized by Clint Rawlings of A Better Shredder.

Polar Bear Plunge to benefit shelter

Members of the Williamsport Polar Bear Club, the board of directors and staff at the Humane Society of Washington County and the Town of Williamsport, invite the community to the 10th annual Polar Bear Plunge on Jan. 1. 
 
The event will take place at the boat ramp in Williamsport at noon.

All proceeds benefit the animal shelter. 

Participants will become official members of the Williamsport Polar Bear Club.

Registration costs $20 per person and includes a custom designed Polar Bear zipper pull, window decal and an official Williamsport Polar Bear Club certificate. 

The first 100 registrants will receive a custom designed insulated beverage tumbler donated by Wolf Furniture. 

Those who collect $500 to $999 in pledges will win a commemorative T-shirt. Those who collect $1,000 to $2,499 will receive a commemorative sweatshirt. Those who collect $2,500 and more will receive a commemorative hoodie. 

Event T-shirts will be available for purchase.

Registration can be completed online at www.hswcmd.org until Friday, Dec. 28, or by contacting the shelter at 301-733-2060.

Participants can also sign up at the event on New Year’s Day.

Trophies donated by K&R Engraving will be awarded for the oldest participant, the best costume and the top pledge earner and top pledge earning team.
