Mail Call - Dec. 7

December 06, 2012

“As we celebrated Thanksgiving just a few days ago, I am very thankful that the extremely radical right of the Republican Party, and their puppet Mitt Romney, will not be appointing up to three Supreme Court justices during the next four years. This is huge.”
— Clear Spring

“This is to the person from South Hagerstown who believes that gay and lesbian couples should have a legal union; that way, otherwise the word ‘marriage’ does not define anything. I kind of like that idea of a legal union, but also to include all sexes with all, whether no matter who they’re marrying, whether it be male, female, or a husband and wife. I would say that marriage, since it is a legal union and not before God, should all be called legal unions, and just do away with marriage, since the word does not define anything.”
— Hagerstown

“Hostess couldn’t blame their financial problems on the union workers, so they closed. Third World wages should be something of the past in this great country of ours. Besides this, half of the people in this country are walking around obese, worrying about Twinkies.”
— Hagerstown

“Just saw something that’s very, very disturbing to me. I live on Garis Shop Road, and went down, took a left on Wagaman Road, and people always dump trash right in this one area. Today there was no trash, but there was a carcass of a young deer, minus its head. I hope whoever you are ... I don’t know what your deal is, but what kind of a person kills an animal, doesn’t bother to eat it, just wants its head, and then leaves the carcass for everybody to see?”
— Hagerstown

“Would please, the folks that read Mail Call, as you see people decorating for Christmas, would you please call in and say where you’ve seen the decorations? My grandson is really enjoying — this is his second Christmas, and he’s really enjoying the Christmas lights, and we want to be able to see as many of them as we can without having to pay for it, because it’s just too expensive. Williamsport has a beautiful display, and of course, we’ll see that one. ... God bless. Merry Christmas.”
— South End

“You know, these right-wingers and all of them, the congressmen and senators down there, the Republicans, they want to cut our benefits on health care and Social Security and all that, saying they don’t have enough money. But yet they have money enough to send overseas to all these countries, including Israel. They get what, $30 billion or something, get $20, $15 billion, all this kind of help. So they have plenty of money. I don’t want to hear it. Just pass the bill.”
— Hagerstown

“Got my 28th of November paper. Salary increases: Are they kidding, in this economy? Some of these are part-time jobs. And then what benefits do they get with their salaries? Also, the senior citizens center, I think the government gave it to the city for a dollar, and the county bought it for $625,000. If we don’t build a stadium, is the city going to have to reimburse us for 911 and everything else that we’re promised to get?”
— Leitersburg

“I understand if I buy cigarettes and beer, the government will buy me bread and milk.”
— Hagerstown

“I find it very ironic that John McCain is upset about Susan Rice, and he claims that she’s unqualified and unintelligent to be secretary of state, that this is coming from the same man who picked Sarah Palin to be the No. 2 person in the U.S., that is the most unqualified person, not to mention woman, in the history of the world, for that job. But yet he thinks a Rhodes scholar is not smart enough to be the secretary of state, but a woman who can’t even tell you what newspaper she reads should be vice president.”
— Hagerstown

“On these proposed pay raises for the county officials, with the economy the way it is, why even consider a double-digit pay raise? As usual, those proposing it are living in another world, spending taxpayer money.”
— Sharpsburg

“Amen to Tom Wilhelm’s editorial about the electoral college should be abolished.”
— Hagerstown
