Girls Basketball: Turnovers hurt Hubs in opener

HAGERSTOWN — North Hagerstown’s girls basketball season opener in its own gym was a tough one, as the Linganore Lancers defeated the Hubs 52-46 on Wednesday.

Turnovers became a running theme in the game for North, as the Hubs gave the ball away 39 times.

“Most of those 39 turnovers were unforced. We have to take care of the ball better,” said North coach Cyndi Miller.

The Hubs (0-1) and Lancers (1-0) entered the second half tied at 21, at which point Linganore found its stroke from long range.

Linganore went 3-for-3 from beyond the arc. Kelli Griffith — who was held scoreless in the first half — scored seven points as the Lancers outscored North 17-12 in the third quarter to take a 38-33 lead they would not relinquish.

“We’re still kind of hoping that our younger players get experience and learn how to take care of the ball quickly,” said Miller. “I don’t know if it was first-game jitters, but we did not play well today.”

Linganore continued to shoot well in the fourth quarter, going 6-for-10 from the floor. Griffith went 3-for-3 to finish with 13 points.

In contrast, North went 4-for-11 in the final period, forcing up many shots.

“We’ve got to learn how to finish and we have to learn how to be confident in our shots,” Miller said.

Neither team was able to find any momentum to begin the game.

North and Linganore shot a combined 4-for-27 in the first quarter, with the Lancers taking a 7-6 advantage.

The Hubs went on an 8-0 run to start the second quarter — led by four points by Crystal McLeod — to take a 14-7 lead, but eight turnovers allowed the Lancers to come back.

Alex Bullard and Holly Gambrell each had five points for Linganore.

McLeod led North with 20 points and five steals. Jasmine Johnson had 11 points, Kayla Peterson had nine points, 11 rebounds and four steals, and Khaliah Frost added 12 rebounds.

Bullard had 12 points and seven rebounds, and Gabrielle Anwar added nine points and four steals for Linganore.
