John E. Poffenberger, 75

John Ellis Poffenberger, born in Hagerstown, Md., went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2012, at Vanderbilt University Hospital in Nashville, Tenn.

He was the son of Charles C. and Edith M. Poffenberger of Hagerstown.

John was a 1955 graduate of Hagerstown High School, attended Washington Bible College, then was ordained at Hagerstown Bible Church.

He served as a chaplain for Good News Jail and Prison Ministry in Alexandria, Va., for 23 years before moving to Harvest, Ala. He was the pastor of senior adults at Capshaw Baptist Church in Harvest.

John is survived by his wife, Betty Bennett Poffenberger of Harvest; two daughters, Leslie A. Gibby (John) and Suzanne M. Poffenberger, both of Madison; two grandsons, Zach and Luke Gibby; and one brother, Phil Poffenberger of Hagerstown.

Visitation with the family was held Nov. 23 at Capshaw Baptist Church. Funeral services were held Nov. 24 at the church.
