MARTINSBURG. W.Va. — Two Martinsburg residents who authorities allege went into cardiac arrest after they injected heroin while their children were in the house have been charged with child neglect, the Martinsburg Police Department said.

Maurilio A. Chaparro, 20, and Caitlin M. McGee, 23, both of 607 N. Second St., were charged with one count each of child neglect with risk of injury, according to a police department news release.

Officers said they received a call at 4:30 p.m. Monday for two people who were in cardiac arrest at a home at 607 N. Second St. in Martinsburg.

When police arrived, they found two adults in the kitchen in various stages of distress, the release said.

Authorities determined that both of the people were in the process of injecting or had just injected heroin.

Police said the adults in the house were revived and refused to be taken to City Hospital in Martinsburg.

Officers said they found a 6-month-old child and a 5-year-old girl in the house, along with needles and other items related to drug use. An investigation determined that Chaparro and McGee were the parents of the children, police said.

Police made arrangements with social workers to find a suitable place for the children to stay, according to the release.
