Vivian Brooks-Brown of Hagerstown, Md., lost her battle to pancreatic cancer on Nov. 22, 2012, at the home of her beloved daughter. Vivian was born Oct. 11, 1952, in Bartonsville, Md., to the late Hope E. West Sharpe and the late William L. Brooks Sr. and wife, Eleanor Onley Brooks.

Vivian was raised in Bartonsville, and graduated from Frederick High School in 1970. She relocated to Boston, Mass., and received an Associate’s degree in fashion design. Thereafter, she was employed at Northeastern University for 18 years. In 2001, she moved back to Maryland and was employed at Macy’s retail store until 2011. 

Vivian is survived by her husband, Ira G. Brown; her only child, Dawn Brooks Tharps and husband, Will Tharps (Hagerstown); three grandchildren, Eric Downie, Jauhara Downie, and Jaelyn Tharps; three children through marriage, Debra Smiley (Hagerstown), Corene Carter and husband, Michael Carter (Syracuse, N.Y.), and Tommy Brown (Albany, N.Y.); eight brothers, Raymond Brooks, William Brooks Jr., Tyrus Onley, Lynn Onley, and Donald Brooks (all of Frederick, Md.), Zeno “Tommy” Onley (Hagerstown), William Sharpe (Lancaster, Pa.), and Donald Sharpe (Carlisle, Pa.); three sisters, Nannie Brooks (Frederick), Adrienne Bell and husband, Ruzie Bell (Germantown, Md.), and Tina Dameron (Charlotte, N.C.); an aunt, Jane Ross; an uncle, Robert Brooks; and a host of nieces, great-nieces, nephews, great-nephews, and cousins. Vivian is also remembered by dear devoted cousins, Tracy and Wayne Naylor, and Shelby Byrd, dear friend, Gloria Murray, and other friends and family. The family sends a special thank you to Washington County Hospice for the loving care they provided.

Vivian was preceded in death by four brothers, Dane Brooks, William “PeeWee” Brooks Jr., Rev. Charles Onley, and Stanley Onley; one sister, Terinessia “Susie” Brooks Harding; three aunts, Elizabeth Brooks, Margaret Watts, and Rebecca Weedon; and three uncles, Carl Brooks, Byron Ross, and Robert Weedon.

Homegoing services will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2012, at Jackson Chapel United Methodist Church, 5609 Ballenger Creek Pike, Frederick, MD, 21703. The family will receive friends at 10 a.m., with funeral services immediately following at 11 a.m. Interment will be private.
