Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down - Nov. 24

November 24, 2012

Thumbs up to the volleyball teams from North Hagerstown (Class 3A), Smithsburg (Class 1A) and Williamsport (Class 2A) high schools that brought state titles home to Washington County in grand fashion in the past week. All three schools completed three-game sweeps in the championship matches, making Washington County the first county in state history to win volleyball titles in three classifications in the same season.

Thumbs up to the various churches and community groups around the Tri-State area that hosted free Thanksgiving meals for the less fortunate among us so they, too, could enjoy the bounty of the holiday season. The countless volunteers who make these events possible put the “giving” in Thanksgiving.

Thumbs down to the hunter near Pittsburgh who illegally shot a trophy buck with a small-caliber gun during archery season. The 225-pound deer with a 10-point rack was shot in the neck Nov. 2 and its carcass left behind. Doesn’t cheating kind of take the sport out of it?
