Francis Henry McDermott, 94, of Hagerstown, Md., died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2012, at Julia Manor Health Care Center.

Born Feb. 10, 1918, in Cresson, Pa., he was the son of the late Alonzo and Elizabeth Wismiller McDermott.   

He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Bridget Ann McDermott, in 2011.

Francis was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army.

He was employed as a social worker by the state of Maryland for 30 years.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Francis was a devoted Catholic who attended daily Mass.

He was a member of St. Vincent DePaul Society in Cumberland, Md.

He is survived by two sons, Michael McDermott and wife, Patricia, of Hagerstown and George McDermott of Jupiter, Fla.; and three grandchildren, Gabrielle McDermott, Patrick McDermott and Matthew McDermott.

He was preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 224 W. Washington St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Collin Poston will be celebrant. Burial will be in Rocky Gap Veterans Cemetery, Flintstone, Md.

The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. A Christian wake service will be at 7 p.m.

The family requests the omission of flowers. Memorial donations may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic School, 218 W. Washington St., Hagerstown, MD 21740.
