Hagerstown native Fred Jones, 82, passed away Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012, at Gilchrist Hospice in Towson, Md., surrounded by his wife and children.

Mr. Jones grew up on Guilford Avenue and graduated from Hagerstown High School in 1948. He was a 1956 graduate of the University of Maryland, College Park, and a member of Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, and later the Army Reserves.

He was born and raised in Hagerstown, and married Sola Jean Rogers of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., in 1965. The two moved their young family to Columbia, Md., in 1973, having embraced Jim Rouse’s vision of a planned community that welcomed people regardless of race, religion or class.

Mr. Jones spent most of his career in media technology sales, but to those who knew him, he was defined by his community involvement and a multitude of outside interests. He served on the Owen Brown Village board from 1975 to 1978, and later as the village representative on the Columbia Council from 1978 to 1980. He was a Civil War historian, avid gardener and gourmet cook. He loved jazz and classical music. He spent untold hours attending his kids’ and later his grandchildren’s sporting events and concerts. He had countless friends whom he loved to entertain, and took tremendous joy in being a mentor to many young people.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Sola Rogers Jones; his sister, Carol Jones Davis and brother-in-law, Richard L. Davis; five children, Jeffrey Jones (wife, Natalia), Kristin Jones Bryce (husband, Joe), Thomas Mulinazzi (wife, Sandra), Jennifer Jones Inglisa (husband, Paul) and Vanessa Jones (partner, Van); 11 adoring grandchildren, Maya and Evan Jones, Joey and Madison Bryce, Sofia, Trajan and Tuscan Mulinazzi, Timothy, Ethan and Mia Inglisa, and Cora Foxwell-Jones; four nieces, a nephew; cousins; and friends.

He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Irvin Leroy Jones and Frances Kountz Jones; and his younger brother, Douglas L. Jones.

The family is planning a celebration of Mr. Jones’ life on Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012.
