Willis H. Carrier II

Mr. Willis Haviland Carrier II, 82, died Oct. 23, 2012, at Fahrney-Keedy Memorial Home and Village in Boonsboro, Md.

Willis was born July 13, 1930, in Glen Ridge, N.J., to Mary Doris Winans Carrier and Earl Gardner Carrier. He was the grandson of Willis Haviland Carrier, the inventor of air conditioning.

Willis graduated from Andover Phillips Academy, attended Cornell University, and received a Naval ROTC scholarship from the University of Virginia, graduating in 1953. He worked as a mechanical engineer in the San Francisco Bay area.

As a commissioned officer on the USS McGinty, Willis made two Pacific cruises from Honolulu. He retired as a lieutenant commander from the U.S. Naval Reserve in 1968. He volunteered for the National Liberty Ships in San Francisco and Baltimore, and also as a ham radio operator for the American Red Cross.

Mr. Carrier is survived by two daughters, Janet Carrier Ady and husband, Piers, of Myersville, Md., and Susan Carrier of California.; four siblings; two grandchildren, Laurel Ady Howard and husband, Jon, of Baltimore and Merrill Ady of Myersville; and five nieces and nephews. His parents predeceased him.

The family plans a memorial service in the San Francisco Bay area.
