Four people were taken to the hospital Wednesday morning following a four-vehicle chain reaction crash on a foggy Interstate 70 eastbound just past Exit 29 at Sharpsburg Pike, according to Maryland State Police 1st Sgt. Kevin Lewis.

State police Lt. Tom Woodward said the accident occurred when the driver of a Honda slowed down due to heavy fog and another vehicle hit it from behind. That caused a chain reaction involving two other vehicles, Woodward said.

I-70 eastbound was shut down following the 5:50 a.m. accident until 7:20 a.m.

Troopers said the people were taken to Meritus Medical Center east of Hagerstown with nonlife-threatening injuries.
