The Washington County Board of Social Services was honored as Board of the Year at the annual meeting of the Maryland Association of Social Service Boards at Kent Narrows, Md., on Oct. 18.

The board was recognized for its successful capital campaign to raise funds to construct the Sunshine Center, a family visiting facility at 221 McRand Court, Suite 200.  The facility creates a family setting that provides an environment dedicated to reuniting children removed from their homes due to abuse and neglect.

Other accomplishments of the board included regular participation in the agency's Quality Council and Strategic Planning process, an 86 percent attendance rate at board meetings and regular participation in agency celebrations and special events.

Four board members volunteered for the county's Homeless Resource Day on March 3.

In accepting the award, David Pool, board chairman and chairman of the state association, said, “We are honored to work with the dedicated employees of Washington County Department of Social Services to serve the county’s needy and vulnerable families.”

Members of the county board are Dolores Harmon, past chairwoman; David Pool, chairman; Gladys Rojas, vice chairwoman; Bonnie Elgin, secretary; William Beard; Sheryl Goree; Randy Schultz; Evelyn Williams; Loretta Wright; and Terry L. Baker, Washington County Commissioner, ex-officio member.
