Ashes thrown into woods ignites brush fire near Smithsburg

SMITHSBURG — Firefighters responded to reports of a brush fire in the 11100 block of Crystal Falls Drive near Smithsburg Monday morning.

The fire was reported at about 11:30 a.m., a Washington County Emergency Services supervisor said.

The fire was started by an area resident who threw smoldering ashes into the woods, Smithsburg Community Volunteer Fire Co.’s Assistant Chief Chuck Johnson said.

The resident had believed the ashes were out and would cause no problem, he said
