A Hagerstown man on Tuesday pleaded guilty in Washington County Circuit Court to molesting a pre-teen girl at his home in June.

Henry Charles Walters, 69, formerly of Crossfield Road in Hagerstown, pleaded guilty to one count of third-degree sex offense.

Walters also had been charged with one count each of second-degree sex offense and perverted practice, but those charges were dropped as part of the plea agreement.

Washington County Circuit Court Judge John H. McDowell ordered that a pre-sentence investigation be conducted. Until then, Walters is to be held in the Washington County Detention Center.

A conviction on a third-degree sex offense carries a maximum 10-year prison term.

Washington County Assistant State’s Attorney Brett Wilson told McDowell that the victim’s mother attended court on Tuesday because she wanted to be heard.

“I can’t even walk out of the room without my daughter being afraid he’s going to come back and hurt her,” the girl’s mother said as she fought back tears.

The mother of the girl told a deputy on June 5 that she allowed her daughter to watch a movie with a neighbor, according to the statement of probable cause that was filed shortly after the incident by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office. When the girl returned, she told siblings that the man had molested her.
