Mr. Nickson W. “Nick” Oyer, 87, of 9383 Oyer Drive, Waynesboro, died at 2:11 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9, 2012, at Waynesboro Hospital. He had been in failing health for the past few months. 

Born May 22, 1925, in Waynesboro, he was the son of the late Walter R. and Ruth L. (Layman) Oyer.

He was a lifelong resident of the Waynesboro area. 

Mr. Oyer graduated from Waynesboro High School with the Class of 1943.

Following graduation, he served with the United States Air Corps from 1943 to 1945 and was honorably discharged as a navigator.

He and his wife of more than 63 years, Alma W. (Warwick) Oyer, were married Sept. 17, 1949, in Hagerstown, Md. They have lived at their present residence for the past 46 years. 

Mr. Oyer was an entrepreneur, who in 1956 took over his father’s business, W.R. Oyer Construction. Business was his life, and he also owned and operated several additional side businesses that dealt in building and leasing.   

He was a member of Fountain Head Country Club in Hagerstown and enjoyed traveling. 

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Patricia O. Eckels and her husband, Robert, of Charleston, S.C.; three grandchildren, Patrick T. Zurgable of Waynesboro, Nichole E. Zurgable of Waynesboro, and Leigh A. Zurgable of Charleston; three great-grandchildren, Nickson T. Zurgable, Brittany P. Zurgable and Grant M. Calimer; and a number of nieces and nephews. 

He was the last of his immediate family. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Richard W. Oyer; and his sister, Lillian O. Heisey.

Services will be held at noon Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2012, at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro, with the Rev. Dr. A. Robert Cook officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro. 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services Wednesday morning in the funeral home. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to one of the following organizations in his memory:  Antietam Humane Society, 8513 Lyons Road, Waynesboro, PA 17268; The Lunch Place, 100 S. Church St., Waynesboro, PA 17268; or New Hope Shelter, 25 S. Potomac St., Waynesboro, PA 17268.
