Dorothy Gertrude (Houpt) Stouffer, 92, died Saturday, Nov. 10, 2012, at Reeders Nursing Home in Boonsboro, Md. She was welcomed into the Lord's arms and greeted by her husband, Earl, and other loved ones.

Born Aug. 20, 1920, in Beaver Creek, Md., she was the daughter of the late Harvey Edgar and Esta Mae (McCauley) Houpt.

She attended Boonsboro High School for several years, but did not graduate because of a severe arthritic condition.

She eloped and married her lifelong partner, Earl Stouffer, on Oct. 20, 1938 (she was 18 and he was 19). They were married 71 years. In their earlier years of marriage, she was employed as a cook by Hagerstown High School, where she prepared meals for 1,000 students plus the faculty. Later, she worked with Earl at the Federal Silk Mill in Williamsport, Md., as a quiller. After fixing up two houses, they purchased and moved to a farm near Leitersburg, Md., where they raised their four children. She was a full-time mother and homemaker and a hard-working farmer's wife. She ran the farm and worked the fields while Earl was at work at Fairchild.

She had a green thumb, loved flower gardening and was a self-taught landscaper. She raised chickens, turkeys, guineas and peafowl.

She and her husband purchased properties and fixed them up to rent. She would learn and could do just about anything when it came to fixing up a property.

She was known for her delicious country meals complete with dessert. Her homemade potato chips were a coveted Christmas gift.

She and Earl enjoyed collecting antiques, attending auctions and vacationing in Myrtle Beach. She enjoyed sewing and mending, and loved to collect all kinds of dolls and beautiful dishes.

She was a member of St. Paul's Free Lutheran Church in Leitersburg, a longtime member of the Leitersburg Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary, and a past member of the Leitersburg Grange and the Washington County Farm Bureau.

She is survived by her children, Shirley R. Thompson of Hagerstown, Jay W. Stouffer and his wife, Joyce, of Hedgesville, W.Va., Dennis A. Stouffer and his wife, Sue, of Smithsburg, and Cindy S. Reeder and her husband, Nelson, of Boonsboro.

She was known affectionately as "Nanny" to her grandchildren. They include Todd A. Thompson of State College, Pa., Jesse W. Reeder and his wife, Kate, of Fallston, Md., and Ashley M. DeStefano and her husband, Harrison, of North Charleston, S.C.; and one stepgranddaughter, Mistie Kelley of Hedgesville.

She will be sadly missed by her brother, Harold E. Houpt of Washington state; sisters, Freda Tucker and Louise Hoffman, both of Boonsboro; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Houck "Farmer" Stouffer; brothers, Roger E. Houpt and Merle L. Houpt; grandson, Jay W. Stouffer Jr.; and son-in-law, Osborne "Ozzie" L. Thompson.

Services will be Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. The Rev. Richard Hembrock will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2012, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21742.
