Jan "Scott" Frey, 65, of Hagerstown, Md., passed away Monday, Nov. 5, 2012, at Meritus Medical Center after a short battle with lung cancer.

Born Aug. 30, 1947, in Cambridge, Md., he was the son of the late Sewell A. Frey and Nanon LeCompte Frey.

He graduated from Cambridge High School in 1965 and attended the University of Baltimore before beginning his career with C&P Telephone Co., then worked as an instruction and development manager with Bell Laboratories in Lisle, Ill., and retired from Verizon in Hagerstown in 2001 after 33 years of service. For the next five years, Scott worked as director of business strategies for Intec Telecom Systems.

Scott is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Jacalyn Spicer Frey, as well as six children and four grandchildren. He was the beloved father of son, Daryl Frey of Oxford, Md.; son, Barton Frey of Davies, Fla.; daughter, Heather Burke and her husband, Scott Burke, of Smithsburg, Md.; daughter, Jennifer Bigelow and her husband, Kevin Bigelow, of Jacksonville, Fla.; son, Peter Frey and his wife, Mary Frey, of Hamilton, Mass.; and son, Joseph Frey at home. Scott was a doting grandfather to four grandsons, Matthew Burke, Andrew Frey, Brayden Burke and Ian Burke. Scott is also survived by his brothers, Toby Frey of Oxford and Laird Frey of Cambridge.

Scott was a true eastern shoreman at heart and loved being on the water. He passionately enjoyed boating, fishing, hunting and golfing. Scott treasured the time that he spent with family and friends doing the things he loved. He and his family have faithfully attended Tri-State Fellowship Evangelical Free Church in Hagerstown and attended Faith Baptist Fellowship when in Cambridge.

A memorial service to celebrate Scott's life will be Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2012, at 7 p.m. at Tri-State Fellowship Church, 13153 Cearfoss Pike, Hagerstown. The family will receive friends before the service from 5 to 7 p.m.

An Eastern Shore memorial service will be Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012, at 1 p.m. at Grace Methodist Church, 501 Race St., Cambridge. The family will receive friends following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Central Maryland Youth for Christ, P.O. Box 3944, Frederick, MD 21705 or Faith Baptist Fellowship, Building Fund, 8 Somerset Ave., Cambridge, MD 21613.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown.
