LaRue Helen Hitchens, 96, of 16505 Virginia Ave., Williamsport, Md., passed away Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2012, at Homewood Retirement Center, Williamsport.

Born May 8, 1916, in Defiance, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Harry Arthur and Edna Pearl Rorabaugh Hitchens.

She was a graduate of Everett High School, Everett, Pa. She was a 1936 graduate of Juniata College, Huntingdon, Pa. She earned her master's degree in education from the University of Maryland.

She was a member of AARP, the Maryland Retired Teachers Association, and the Washington County Retired Teachers Association. She was also an auxilian at Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown, Md.

Prior to her retirement in 1979, she taught school for 43 years in both Pennsylvania and Maryland.

She was a member of Williamsport United Methodist Church, Williamsport.

She was the last surviving member of her family.

She is survived by close friends and caretakers, Donald L. Reeser of Hagerstown and Phyllis J. Skidmore of Williamsport.

The funeral home will be open Friday, Nov. 9, 2012, from noon to 4 p.m., for the convenience of family and friends.

Graveside services will be held Monday, Nov. 12, 2012, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Richard A. Kroll officiating. Interment will be in Duvall Cemetery, Six Mile Run, Pa.
