County approves Rural Legacy Program Grant to project land

November 07, 2012

The Washington County Board of Commissioners voted 4-0 Tuesday to approve a grant agreement so that the county can receive a $1.26 million Rural Legacy Program Grant from the state.

The Rural Legacy Program is designed in part to protect open space, farmland and similar areas from sprawl, according to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources website at www.dnr.state.md.us.

The county’s total land in the program will increase to 4,721 acres on 39 farms as a result of the new grant. Over the years, the county has received grants worth about $14 million through the legacy program.

Commissioner Jeffrey Cline was absent.
