Two taken to Meritus after vehicle strikes bear on I-70

Two people were taken to Meritus Medical Center after their vehicle struck and killed a black bear Monday night on Interstate 70 west of Hancock, Maryland State Police said.

First Sgt. Kevin Lewis said the accident happened shortly before 11 p.m. in the westbound lanes of Interstate 68.

Lewis said the vehicle drove off the road after it struck the bear. He said the occupants were taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries that were not life-threatening.

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources was called to remove the bear.

Lewis said further details, including the names of people involved in the accident, were unavailable.
