November 06, 2012

A Middletown, Md., man was flown to the hospital after the car he was driving was struck by a dump truck and a tractor-trailer Tuesday morning on Interstate 70 at South Mountain, Maryland State Police said.

Mark Jason Williams, of the 8000 block of Reno Monument Road in Middletown, was flown to R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Medical Center in Baltimore to be treated for his injuries, according to a state police news release.

His condition was unavailable Tuesday afternoon.

Troopers said Williams was driving a 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt east on a three-lane stretch of Interstate 70 at about 10 a.m., when a gray pickup truck traveling in the middle lane moved left toward Williams’ vehicle.

The pickup’s movement caused the Cobalt to drive into the median, drift back into the travel lanes and strike the guardrail on the right shoulder, the release said. The Cobalt then spun into the roadway and was struck by the dump truck and tractor-trailer.

The driver of the tractor trailer, Daniel Awiadem, of Columbia, Md., and the driver of the dump truck, James Mark Harbaugh, of Keymar, Md., were not injured, according to the release.
