William “Bill” O. Renner, 96, of 17800 Virginia Ave., Hagerstown, Md., died Saturday, Nov. 3, 2012, in Hagerstown.

Born March 10, 1916, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Thomas A. and Grace Elizabeth (Boward) Renner.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Denise Yvonne (Weller) Renner, on Sept. 11, 2000. They were happily married Aug. 20, 1946, at Washington Square United Methodist Church, Hagerstown, and remained so for 54 years.

Bill graduated from Hagerstown High School in the Class of 1935.

He obtained a mechanical engineering degree from the Detroit School of Engineering. He furthered his education by receiving a second graduate degree in metallurgy from the Colorado School of Metals and a third degree in light metals for aircraft design and fabrication from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, Wis.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II.

Bill was the executive vice president of engineering for Grove Manufacturing, Shady Grove, Pa., where he started in 1953 traveling the world. He retired in Nov. 1, 1985, at the age of 69 with more than 32 years of service.

Bill was also associated with the National Safety of Engineers, the Society of Automation Engineers, a 50-year member of the BPOE Lodge 378, Hagerstown, a Masonic Brother with Friendship Lodge 84 AF&AM, 32nd degree Mason of the Scottish Rite, York Rite, Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Royal Order of Jesters 117 and past director of Kentucky Colonels, past potentate of the Association Commission of Kentucky Colonels Hill Billus Clan 12, and the Hagerstown Shriners, Ali Ghan Shrine, where he was the potentate in 1980. He was a life member of the American Legion of Maryland, the North American Hunting Club, the National Rifle Association, the Shriners Hospital for Children, The Improved Order of Red Men Tribe 84, the National Historical Association and the Hardy Man Club of America.

Bill is survived by his daughter, Laura A. and husband, Thomas Bowers; two grandchildren, Joan F. Bowers and John A. Bowers; and two great-grandsons, Ryan Bowers and Dustin Bowers.

In addition to his parents and wife, Bill was preceded in death by three sisters, Margaret N. Garling, Mary Jane Boyer and Anna Ruth Renner; and four brothers, Howard J. Renner, Edgar A. Renner, John L. Renner and Marvin L.W. Renner.

The graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2012, at Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children Burn Unit, 3551 N. Broad St., Philadelphia, PA 19140-4131.
