Frostburg State University student to perform vocal recital Saturday

November 04, 2012

FROSTBURG, Md. — Frostburg State University soprano Patricia Malatt will present her junior vocal recital Saturday at 7 p.m. in the FSU Performing Art Center’s Pealer Recital Hall. The recital, during which she will be accompanied by Sean Beachy, is free and open to the public.

Malatt will perform several vocal pieces involving nature. Roger Quilter’s “Dream Valley,” composed after a poem written by William Blake, tells of a time when the speaker was in touch with nature and the beauty that it holds.

The composition portrays the text through its melodic and flowing phrases.

“Avril” is a French art song written by Léo Delibes. The song starts off with a refrain that talks about the beginning of spring and the sweet scents that it brings.

Malatt also will perform works by George Frederick Handel, Vincenzo Bellini, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Robert Schumann, Mikhail Glinka, Ernest Chausson, Lee Hoiby, Arthur Sullivan and Charles Gounod.

While pursuing her bachelor’s degree in music management, Malatt has taken classes with Mariana Mihai-Zoeter and Karen Soderberg.

She has made the dean’s list for the past five semesters.

When she is not studying, Malatt is helping out other FSU students as a member of the BURG Peer Education Network.

She anticipates graduating in December 2013, and hopes to become a coordinator for large events.

She is the daughter of Mark and Marissa Malatt of Frederick, Md., and is a 2009 graduate of Urbana High School.
