Shelby J. Bowman, 76, of 929 S. Potomac St., Hagerstown, Md., passed away Thursday, Nov. 1, 2012, at her home, after a long courageous battle with cancer for nearly three years.

Born Sept. 29, 1936, at home in Security, Md., she was the daughter of the late John Henry and Irene Elizabeth (Gross) Lowman.

She is survived by her husband, Donald Lynn Bowman, to whom she was married for 59 years. They were married May 22, 1953, by the Rev. Norment in the parsonage of First Christian Church.

She attended Hagerstown High School with the class of 1954. She was a member of First Christian Church, Potomac Avenue, Hagerstown. She was a member of Eagles Club 694 Ladies Auxiliary for 36 years, holding several positions. She was active in the Cub Scouts and the Girl Scouts of America with her children for several years. She enjoyed traveling on bus trips, Sister's Day Out, flea marketing, and yard sales.

Her flare for style and natural beauty gave her the opportunity to work for Central Motors Dodge in the 1970s as a showroom hostess. For several years, she was a sales representative for Sarah Coventry jewelry. As a devoted wife, she proudly attained the title of Domestic Goddess, and was loved as a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister.

In addition to her husband, Donald, she is survived by one daughter, Teresa D. Hoffman and her husband, Jerry, of Hagerstown; her granddaughters, Jocelyn A. Price of Hagerstown, and Melanie N. McIntire and her husband, Jonathon, of Waynesboro, Pa.; one great-granddaughter, Taylor O. Massey of Hagerstown; one brother, William D. Lowman and his wife, Linda, of Simpsonville, S.C.; four sisters, Peggy I. Corsi, Janet L. Harris, Sonia E. Moser and her husband, Eugene, and Penelope A. Marks, all of Hagerstown; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Gary L. Bowman; three brothers, John H. Lowman Jr., James E. Lowman and Ronald (Butch) Lowman; and a special aunt and uncle, James W. and Dorothy (Penner) Lowman.

Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 5, 2012, at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Randall Reid will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m.

The family extends special recognition to Hospice for the in-home, quality care provided by their staff during her last months. In gratitude, the family requests memorial donations be made to Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21742.
