HAGERSTOWN — Clear Spring advanced to the semifinals of the Maryland Class 1A West boys soccer tournament by shutting out Fort Hill 2-0 in Thursday’s late game at Mike Callas Stadium.

The Blazers (13-2-1) advance to play at Brunswick on Saturday at 6 p.m.

After misses by Nick Brandt and Jonathan Henesy from point-blank range in the third minute, C.J. Elwood got Clear Spring on the board in the 19th minute. Brandt brought the ball up the left side of the field and flicked a perfect cross to Elwood, who headed the ball past Fort Hill goalie Jarrett Wolfe.

While the Blazers had many more opportunities, they failed to dent the scoreboard again until the closing minutes.

Clear Spring launched 22 shots in the contest, many of which should have been easy goals. Wolfe made nine saves, and many of the Blazers’ shots sailed over or wide of the net.

Thankfully for the Blazers, their aggressiveness to the ball allowed them to win the possession battle by a wide margin, keeping the ball on Fort Hill’s side of the field.

Clear Spring finally scored its second goal in the 78th minute, when junior Kevin Carbajal slammed a rebound into the left corner of the net.

Fort Hill never got a chance to establish its offense, as the Sentinels only managed two shots on goal — both of which were saved by goalie Levi Bucher.
