SMITHSBURG — Boonsboro, Boonsboro, Boonsboro, Boonsboro.

The Warriors swept all four titles Thursday at the Maryland Class 1A West Cross Country Championships on Smithsburg High School’s hilly and muddy 3.04-mile course.

Senior Sarah Zielinski won the girls race, junior Sean Snyder was the boys champion and both led Boonsboro to team victories.

“I’m beyond thrilled, I’m ecstatic, I’m almost speechless” Boonsboro coach Becky Walter said. “I knew we’d do well, but I didn’t think we’d perform quite so well. But the kids have been working hard all season and looking forward to this, and it paid off. It builds a lot of confidence going into states.”

Snyder set the early pace in the boys race en route to winning in 16:59.1. A 5:10 first mile gave him a 5-second lead over North Carroll’s Grant Dell, and a 5:38 second mile expanded his lead over Dell to 22 seconds. While Dell closed the gap over final 1.04, he had to settle for a close second in 17:07.8.

“It was a really good race,” Snyder said. “I went out a little fast, but I felt comfortable and took advantage of the opportunity. I was a little scared at the end, but I was able to hold it together and hold him off.”

His teammates were a dominant force behind him. The Boonsboro boys finished with three of the top five, five of the top nine and seven of the top 15 places overall in the field of 70 runners, as they scored a mere 25 points. Mountain Ridge held off North Carroll 68-74 for second.

Otto Solberg finished third in 17:32.7 for the Warriors, while Josh Testa was fifth (17:58.8), Nick Zielinski was seventh (18:08.0), Tom Kersting was ninth (18:13.5), Randy Lohman was 14th (18:27.2) and Alex Thaggard was 15th (18:28.1).

“I just want to thank God for keeping us all safe all season, and I’m just really looking forward to states,” Snyder said.

The Warriors will be aiming for their first boys state team title in program history on Nov. 10 at Hereford.

“I’d be awfully honored to lead the team to that,” Snyder said.

Sarah Zielinski successfully defended her region title in 19:34.1, while Manchester Valley’s Abby Culp was the runner-up in 19:46.8.

Zielinski overtook Culp for the lead shortly after the first mile and led the rest of the way.

“Today it was really muddy, so the goal was just to not get injured for states,” said Zielinski, who is hoping to improve on last year’s state runner-up finish. “This is my last year, so I’m hoping I’ll get it. That’s the big goal.”

The Boonsboro girls also are hoping to improve on last year’s runner-up team finish at states as they chase their first state title since 1995.

They held their own in the region Thursday, topping Manchester Valley 32-45 for the title, while Mountain Ridge was third (79).

Kortney Cunningham finished third in 20:26.1 for the Warriors, while Ella Hawkins was fifth (20:52.5), Samantha Smith was seventh (21:15.4) and Jenny Moore was 16th (22:32.1) for Boonsboro in the field of 58 runners.

The other Washington County schools at the meet were Clear Spring, Hancock and Smithsburg.

In the girls race, the top four teams and top 15 individuals advanced to states, while the top six teams and top 19 individuals advanced in the boys race.

Smithsburg’s Chelsea Massie qualified individually in the girls race, finishing 15th (22:08.5), while Smithsburg finished sixth in the boys race to advance as a team.
