Geraldine Elizabeth Buchanan Irving, 83, of 18309 College Road in Hagerstown, Md., went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2012, at her home.

Born Oct. 1, 1929, in Charlton, Md., she was the daughter of the late Joseph Raymond and Alice Matilda Burkett Buchanan.

She graduated in 1947 from Greencastle High School. 

She worked as a nurses' aide at Waynesboro Hospital before studying at the nursing school, which was affiliated with Washington County Hospital, graduating as an R.N. in 1953. She furthered her education, taking graduate courses at Columbia University. She taught nursing at Washington County Hospital, and worked at the hospital in the operating room before suspending work in 1957 at the birth of her first child. Later, she was employed as a fashion coordinator by The Windmill Shop in Hagerstown.

Throughout her life, she was active in Christian churches and with youth and relief work. She participated in the Hagerstown Christian Youth Center from the mid-50s, and she was a Sunday school teacher. She was also an intercessory prayer warrior. She painted religious paintings. She started and led a neighborhood Christian youth group and a women's prayer group on College Road. She had a heart for missionary work. She both supported missions work in local churches and traveled outside the United States on missionary projects.

She enjoyed helping others inside and outside the United States. She was involved in Disaster Relief, Christian Work Camp, and Habitat for Humanity, building, rebuilding and repairing homes.

She was always ready to help others in need. 

Her interests were hiking, cooking, fishing, hunting, antiques, fashion, camping, gardening and reading.

She lived a full life, and will be missed by family, friends and others who were blessed by her life, love and testimony. Her favorite Psalm was the 91st.

She is survived by her husband, Robert Gerald Irving; three sons, David Gerald Irving, a missionary in Brazil, and Paul Joseph Irving and Michael Shawn Irving, both of Hagerstown; one sister, Nellie MacIntosh of Greencastle, Pa.; one brother, John Buchanan of Greencastle; and four grandchildren, Lauren Elizabeth Irving, Lindsay Kae Irving, Robert Lima de Morais Irving and Alice Beth Amowa Lima de Morais Irving. 

She was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Jane McDonald.

Graveside services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park. 

There will be no viewing.
