Harry James McAbee Jr., 88, of 1633 Edgewood Place in Hagerstown, Md., died Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2012, at his home.

Born May 30, 1924, in Mapleville, Md., he was the son of the late Harry J. McAbee Sr. and Edith Frances Cunningham McAbee.

He was a 1942 graduate of Hagerstown High School, and soon after enlisted in the U.S. Navy/Air Force from 1943 to 1946. He was a radio operator and gunner on a B-24.

He was employed by Fairchild as a senior buyer, Glenn L. Martin for one year, and then Westinghouse Defense and Space Center as a senior subcontract specialist, retiring in 1985.

He was a lifelong member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, and sang on the choir for several years.

He was a member of V.F.W. Post 1936 and Boonsboro American Legion Post 10. He volunteered at St. Mark's Food Bank for 25 years. He served on the Park Board for numerous terms. Harry was an avid golfer for many years until health reasons forced him to quit.

In approximately 1988, when the city tried to sell the Municipal Golf Course, Harry, with the help of many volunteers, established "Save Open Space" and raised money for legal fees to sue the mayor and council, and was able to save the golf course. Because of a petition drive, the city cannot sell the golf course without putting it to referendum and the citizens voting on it. After "Save Open Space" was disbanded, the remaining money of approximately $3,000 was donated to Holly Place.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years on Dec. 12, 2012, Bonnie Boyer McAbee; one son, Steven Allen McAbee and wife, Mary Ellen Deardorff McAbee; one sister, C. Louise Baker; a grandson, Brandon Allen McAbee, who he was very close to and had many happy times with him as he grew up; sister-in-law, Madelyn McAbee; brother-in-law, G. Patrick Boyer and wife, Linda; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Peggy L. Smith; and two brothers, Edwin K. McAbee and Robert F. McAbee.

Funeral services will be Friday at 2:30 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. James F. Hay Jr. will officiate.  Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown, with military honors provided by Morris Frock American Legion Post 42.

The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home.
