WILLIAMSPORT — The Smithsburg Leopards took advantage of a second chance in the final seconds to come away with a 20-14 victory over the Williamsport Wildcats on Friday night in an MVAL Antietam football game.

With the score tied 14-14 with 15 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, senior Austin Ryan attempted a 23-yard field goal for Smithsburg and the kick was blocked. But an inadvertent whistle was blown during the play.

That gave the Leopards a second chance for a field goal attempt, but they were penalized 5 yards for illegal procedure.

Finally, the Leopards got things set up for a 28-yard field goal attempt with 13 seconds to go.

However, Smithsburg faked the field goal attempt and went with a passing play. Senior quarterback Zachary Krall threw a game-winning, 10-yard touchdown pass to senior tight end Brian Orndorff on the left side with 8 seconds left to give the Leopards a 20-14 lead. The extra-point attempt was blocked.

Williamsport was whistled for a pair of unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. That allowed the Leopards to kick off from the Wildcats’ 30-yard line. Smithsburg attempted an onside kick and successfully recovered it at the Williamsport 20-yard line with 6 seconds remaining. The Leopards took a knee to run out the clock and nail down the victory.

Williamsport took a 7-0 lead with 8:42 to go in the second quarter when senior quarterback T.J. Boyer tossed a 38-yard touchdown pass along the left sideline to senior wide receiver Jesse Zeger and senior Ryan Shoemaker kicked the extra point.

Smithsburg tied the score at 7-7 with 5:27 left in the second quarter when Kroll fired a 35-yard touchdown pass to Ryan along the left sideline and then Ryan kicked the extra point.

The Wildcats went ahead 14-7 with 10 minutes remaining in the third quarter when junior running back Jack Kelly had a 15-yard touchdown run to the left side and Shoemaker added the extra point.

The Leopards evened the score at 14-14 with 9 minutes to go in the fourth quarter when Ryan broke through left tackle for a 14-yard touchdown run and then added the extra point.

Ryan gained a total of 111 rushing yards on 28 carries, while Kroll finished with 81 passing yards for Smithsburg.

Boyer completed 12 of his 17 passes for 150 passing yards for Williamsport.
