Tractor-trailer accident ties up morning traffic on I-81 in Berkeley County

SPRING MILLS, W.Va. — Trafic on northbound Interstate 81  in northern Berkeley County was tied up for hours Tuesday morning as crews cleaned up the scene of a tractor-trailer accident.

The accident took place at around 5:45 a.m., when the tractor-trailer crashed through a guardrail on the right side of the highway near mile marker 19. Gravel covered the right lane. The tractor-trailer cab came to rest to the right of the highway, with the trailer on the shoulder of the road.

No one was injured, a Berkeley County Emergency Services supervisor said.

One, and sometimes both, northbound lanes were closed for a time for allow for cleanup and for towing the tractor-trailer, the supervisor said.

The accident took place in a construction zone about a mile south of the Spring Mills exit. A six-mile stretch of I-81 is being widened from four to six lanes.
