Hagerstown-Washington County Chamber forum canceled

October 23, 2012

HAGERSTOWN — A Hagerstown-Washington County Chamber of Commerce forum for U.S. Senate candidates scheduled for Wednesday morning has been canceled.

Brien J. Poffenberger, the chamber’s president, said Republican candidate Dan Bongino had committed to attend a few months ago.

But, on Monday, the chamber learned that incumbent U.S. Benjamin L. Cardin, a Democrat, would not attend.

The chamber still would have held the forum, but the two candidates agreed to instead get together for a different event on Wednesday, Poffenberger said.

The chamber did not invite Libertarian candidate Dean Ahmad or unaffiliated candidate Rob Sobhani, the other two choices on the Nov. 6 ballot. Poffenberger said the chamber’s practice has been to only include candidates from the two major parties.

The chamber has held election forums this month for school board and Hagerstown mayoral candidates.

The last event in its election series will be a forum for 6th District congressional candidates on Oct. 31 at 7:30 a.m. at Applause Catering, 58 E. Washington St., Hagerstown.
