Mason is USA 50 Mile masters champ

BOALSBURG, Pa. — Andy Mason, 40, of Hagerstown won the masters (40-and-older) national title at the USA 50 Mile Championships on Sunday at Tussey Mountain in Rothrock State Forest.

Mason covered the challenging course in 6 hours, 46 minutes, 1 second, placing seventh overall in the field of 168 runners.


Shepherd 3, Pitt-Johnstown 0

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. — Senior forward Shane Lowery, a Boonsboro graduate, scored all three goals to lead Shepherd University over Pitt-Johnstown (1-13-1, 1-6-1) in a West Virginia Conference game.

The Rams (6-8-1, 4-4) took a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute when Lowery scored on a feed from junior midfielder Griffin Frazier.

Lowery added a pair of second-half goals in a span of less than three minutes. He scored off a corner kick from junior midfielder Abel Setegn in the 71st minute, and later converted off another Setegn assist in the 74th to complete his hat trick.

Shepherd had a 21-11 advantage in shots and a 5-1 edge in corner kicks. Freshman Alex Aleshire, a Willliamsport graduate, made five saves.


Shepherd 2, Pitt-Johnstown 0

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. — North Hagerstown graduate Kelsey N. Smith, a sophomore defender, scored Shepherd University’s second goal in Sunday’s shutout of Pitt-Johnstown in WVIAC play.

Shepherd (5-7-3, 4-3-2) took a 1-0 lead when junior forward Morgan Gabriel scored an unassisted goal in the first half. Smith’s score, off an assist from sophomore forward Taylor Amsley, doubled the lead in the second half.

The Rams had a 20-11 advantage in shots and a 5-1 edge in corner kicks over the Lady Cats (11-5, 5-4).


CVCS at MDCC Tournament

CRESAPTOWN, Md. — Cumberland Valley Christian suffered a 25-22, 25-15, 25-21 loss to Calvary Christian in the semifinals and a 25-15, 23-25, 15-9 loss to Shalom Christian in the third-place match of the Mason Dixon Christian Conference tournament at Calvary on Saturday.

Marin Kearns had 14 kills and Laiton Suders added 12 kills and 17 digs over the two matches to lead the Blazers. Karli Fogal had 28 assists over the two matches, while Anna Bunting had eight kills against Calvary.
