Bernard Frank Bargiel, 87, of 13937 Distant View Ave., Maugansville, Md., passed away Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2012, at home.

Born Sunday, Jan. 25, 1925, in Wheeling, W.Va., he was the son of the late Joseph Bargiel and the late Nellie Dudek Bargiel.

Bernie was a 1943 graduate of Central Catholic High School in Wheeling. He was employed with the State of Maryland Comptroller's Office in Annapolis for 12 years. He was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church, where he was an usher. He was a life member of the Morris Frock American Legion Post 42 and the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 14. He was a 4th Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus Pangborn Council and Knights of Columbus Assembly. He was a former member of the Maugansville Ruritan Club and charter member of the Washington County Rose Society. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the 70th and 3rd Infantry Division Medical Detachment and the 39th Field Artillery Detachment of the U.S. Army.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Frances Joan Bargiel; daughters, Joanie Michel and husband, Ted, of Murrells Inlet, S.C., Annette Plitman and husband, Mark, of Olney, Md., and Teresa Swain and husband, Tim, of Maugansville, Md.; grandson, Jacob Swain and wife, Wesley; granddaughters, Jodi and Laura Plitman; grandson, Andy Michel; and great-grandsons, Camden, Parker and Tanner Swain.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, Oct. 19, 2012, at 9:30 a.m., from the St. Ann Catholic Church, 1525 Oak Hill Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21742, with the Rev. Martin Nocchi as celebrant.

Family will receive friends at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, Thursday, Oct. 18, 2012, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Interment will follow at the Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown, MD 21742.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Disabled American Veterans Local Chapter 14, 11837 Hanging Rock Road, Clear Spring, MD 21722-1058.
