New public comments policy to begin at Tuesday's school board meeting

October 15, 2012

Members of the public who want to comment at the Washington County Board of Education’s business meeting on Tuesday night won’t have to wait long.

The public comments section of the meeting is scheduled for approximately five minutes into the meeting, or right after the board votes on approval of past meeting minutes. The flow of the meeting does not often match the estimated times set for particular items on the agenda.

Public comments will be followed by an opportunity for board members to comment, if they wish to do so, on what members of the public say.

The board voted unanimously at its Oct. 2 meeting to approve the second reading of two new policies that reorganize the order of events during meetings and give board members an earlier opportunity to comment on the what the public says, according to a video of the meeting.

Previously, members of the public had to wait to comment until after the school board addressed personnel actions and heard reports from staff. Board members used to have to wait until the end of the meeting to respond to public comments.
