Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down - Oct. 13

October 12, 2012

Thumbs up to the Arc of Washington County and all those responsible for the Dancing with the Arc Stars fundraiser last Saturday at Hager Hall Conference & Events Center in Hagerstown. What a great way to turn a popular idea into a way to raise money and have fun. Also, a special kudos to contestants Clayton Wilcox, Heather Guessford and Joe Ross for being good sports and their partners Brenna Bacon Ranieli, Amber Henry and Ryan Flurie.

Thumbs up to the Greater Hagerstown Committee and its efforts to start a tuition assistance program for Washington County high school graduates. Although it’s just a proposal at this point, we think it has merit and is a definite need in our community.

Thumbs up to Tuscarora School District officials who are applying for a grant to install a wind turbine at James Buchanan High School near Mercersburg, Pa. Educators there want to use the turbine as a teaching tool for students interested in green technology.

Thumbs down to the folks responsible for the roach eating contest in Florida that left one man dead — the winner, of course. How far do we have to push the bounds of common sense?
