Regina "Jean" Cushwa died peacefully at her home on Monday, October 8, 2012.

She was born in Philadelphia on June 2, 1922. She graduated from West Catholic Girls School in Philadelphia and attended Philadelphia School of Designing before marrying David K. Cushwa III in 1946 and moving to Williamsport, Md., where she lived for the rest of her life. She was a housewife and mother of three children.

She was a member of St. Augustine's Catholic Church in Williamsport, Md., for over 65 years. Jean was very involved in her community and was a board member of Girls Inc., Washington County Museum of Fine Arts and The Historical Society of Washington County. Over the years, she was a member of the Women's Club, various gardening clubs of Hagerstown and she was very proud to have been one of the first volunteers for Hospice when the organization was first being put together in Washington County. She mentored children at the local Williamsport schools and enjoyed that very much in her later years.

She is survived by her son, David Kreigh Cushwa IV and his wife Kim of Hagerstown; her daughter, Nancy Cushwa Nimsz and her husband Patrick of Ocean City, Md; grandchildren, Colin David Nimsz of Costa Mesa, Calif., Taylor Patrick Nimsz of Hoboken, N.J., Sara Renee Shupp of Salisbury, Md., Whitney Cushwa Eckenrode and her husband Mark of Frederick, Md., Valerie Cushwa Lypson and her husband Scott of Dillon, Colo., Michael David Cushwa and Alyson Kathleen Cushwa of Hagerstown. She also has two beautiful great-grandchildren that she adored, Jackson Kreigh Cushwa and Gracyn Olivia Eckenrode of Frederick, Md. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, David Kreigh Cushwa III, in 1988; her parents, Regina and John Fleming; her brother, John Fleming Jr.; and her daughter, Denise Cushwa Shupp in 1991.

Jean loved spending time with her many friends. She did a lot of traveling over the years and one of her favorites was Ireland.

The visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, October 11, 2012, at the Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown. The Christian Wake Service will begin at 6 p.m.

In lieu of flowers and because Jean loved helping people, the family would like to request donations in Jean's name to the Community Free Clinic of Washington County. She often mentioned how lucky she was to have excellent health care and knew that there were many in Washington County who did not.

The Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, Bryan K. Kenworthy P.A., 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown, has been entrusted with the arrangements. Online condolences are accepted at
