HAGERSTOWN — The St. Maria Goretti boys cross country team finished with a flurry.

The Gaels won their second straight title at the third annual Hagerstown City Championship at Hagerstown Community College on Monday to wrap up their six-meet season schedule — just two days after they successfully defended their title at the Independent-Parochial School League Championship.

“Last year there were nine days between the IPSL and city championships, but due to scheduling there were only 48 hours this year,” Goretti coach Mike Spinnler said. “I was worried about how they’d come back emotionally and physically with only about 48 hours between two championship races. But, man, they pulled it off. They stepped up to it.”

On Monday, the Goretti boys captured five of the individual medals awarded to the top 10 finishers, and topped the three-team field with 30 points. South Hagerstown was second (41) and North Hagerstown was third (49).

Senior Luke Daigneault led the way for the Gaels in the cold, rainy conditions, winning in 16:54 as he controlled the 3.1-mile race from start to finish. North’s Bryan Durboraw, who won last year’s city title while competing for South, had to settle for runner-up honors this year in 17:30, while South’s Daniel Hockensmith finished third in 18:05.

“I wanted to break (Durboraw) from the beginning and not give him any chance,” Daigneault said. “I’ve been putting a lot of pressure on myself lately, and today I just wanted to trust in God a little more and run free. I felt really good.”

The Gaels’ other medal winners in the boys race were Patrick Jones (fourth, 18:12), Kevin Proctor (sixth, 18:15), Wyatt Derr (ninth, 19:36) and Patrick Sacchet (10th, 19:36).

Other top-10 finishers included North’s Carson Izer (fifth, 18:13) and South’s Isaiah Merrill (seventh, 19:05) and Hunter Hartman (eighth, 19:08).

North junior Emily Ward convincingly won the girls race for the second straight year, leading the Hubs to their third straight city team title.

While Ward said she hadn’t fully recovered from Saturday’s Don Stoner Invitational at Smithsburg — where she was the large-school individual champion — she didn’t need to be at 100 percent to dominate Monday. She still won by more than two minutes in 20:28.

“I’m not really happy with my time, but it was cold and I was sore,” she said. “I just accepted that my legs were dead.”

North swept the top three places as Brittany Appleby was the runner-up in 22:38 and Allison Martin took third in 23:06. The Hubs also got medal-winning efforts from Kate Milford (eighth, 24:55) and Danielle Garth (ninth, 25:13) and won with 23 points. Goretti was second (38) and South was third (65).

“This is the city championship, and it’s great to win it,” said Ward of the team title. “It’s a great feeling to know that we did this together.”

“This is always a fun race. We always like to be here,” North coach Lindsay Zerance said. “I’m really proud of all of them.”

The Goretti girls had four top-10 finishes. Keeley Scott placed fourth in 23:18 to lead the Gaels, while Anne Marie Sullivan was sixth (24:15), Emma Whelan was seventh (24:45) and Ellie Didden was 10th (25:17).

Sage Brewer placed fifth (23:42) for South.
