Christian youths to apply elbow grease to ailing homes

October 08, 2012

FUNKSTOWN — Similar to the United Way’s annual Day of Caring, a Christian workcamp is planned for part of Washington County next June to help those in need with home improvements, according to a presentation Pat Martin made to Funkstown officials on Monday night.

Trinity Lutheran Church in Smithsburg and GroupCares, of Loveland, Colo., are co-sponsoring the June 16-22, 2013, event with the goal to perform repairs and maintenance on 60 to 80 homes that are within a 30-minute drive of Smithsburg. The Mason-Dixon Workcamp wants to help low-income homeowners and elderly or disabled residents.

Martin asked Funkstown officials to help get the word out and make applications available to local residents in need.

The application can be found online at www.mason-dixon-workcamp.org/index.html.

Most of the approximately 400 Christian youths expected to participate in the workcamp will be from outside the area and will stay at Smithsburg High School, where they will sleep on classroom floors, Martin said.

In addition to spreading the word, the community can help by adopting a worksite, bringing food and encouragement to volunteers, Martin said.

The sponsors also need to raise $25,000 to help pay for materials, she said.

The United Way of Washington County’s Day of Caring, in which volunteers help nonprofit groups and elderly or disabled residents, is this Wednesday.
