High School Football: Warriors shut out Cougars

BOONSBORO — To say Clayton Anders was all smiles wouldn’t be completely accurate, but the Boonsboro football coach didn’t have many reasons to be displeased Friday night.

His Warriors completely dismantled Catoctin, amassing 441 yards of total offense in a 38-0 MVAL Antietam victory.

“We thought this would be a shootout, like last year,” said Anders. “The fact that we got out and had success on both sides of the ball is a testament to the work these young men have been doing.”

That was certainly obvious on the offensive side, as the Warriors completely controlled the line of scrimmage and rushed for 315 yards.

While Justin Jardeleza led the way with 104 yards on 13 carries, it was Ethan Foster who scored three touchdowns while rushing for 80 yards. Chad Cowden added 126 yards through the air, with a pair of touchdowns to Zach Poffenberger.

“We’re still a run-run team,” said Anders. “We were able to throw the ball some tonight and mix things up a little.”

Defensively, Boonsboro held the Cougars to just 151 yards of total offense despite giving up 39 yards on the first series, with Collin Schildt accounting for 33 of those yards.

“It’s very hard for our scout team to replicate their offense,” said Anders. “And I’m sure it’s difficult for their scout team to replicate ours. Until we were able to see the speed of their game, it was hard to know how to play them.”

Boonsboro was able to get things going early offensively, taking advantage of a 19-yard Catoctin punt and marching 47 yards, with Poffenberger hauling in a Cowden pass for a 10-yard score and a 7-0 lead with 3:13 left in the opening period.

After recovering a Cougars fumble at their own 45-yard line, the Warriors needed just nine plays to take a 13-0 advantage, with Foster rushing it in from the 7.

Poffenberger scored his second touchdown of the game on the following possession, capping a 72-yard drive with a 7-yard pass from Cowden with 5:16 left in the half — Jardeleza set up the score with a 53-yard run.

The Warriors managed another score prior to halftime when Foster ran it in from the 3.

Boonsboro made it 35-0 late in the third quarter, marching 60 yards on nine plays, with Foster scoring his third TD, this one on a 5-yard run.

Calleb Yurish wrapped up the scoring with a 31-yard field goal with 2:05 left in the game.
