1. Strike up the bands

Showcase of Marching Bands will be Tuesday, Oct. 9, at South Hagerstown High School stadium, 1101 S. Potomac St., Hagerstown. Gates open at 5:45 p.m.; show starts at 7 p.m. Participating schools are: Hancock High School Panther Band (host band), Clear Spring High School Blazer Band, Boonsboro High School Warrior Band, North Hagerstown High School Hub Band, Smithsburg High School Leopard Band, South Hagerstown High School Rebel Band and Williamsport High School Blue Band. $4, advance; $5, at the gate. Senior Citizen Gold Cards will be honored. Rain date, Tuesday, Oct. 16.


2. Get ready to scream

Field of Terrors will be 7 to 11 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays; Oct. 12 through Oct. 20. Haunted fields to benefit Star Community. 7 to 11 p.m. Star Community Inc., 13672 Greencastle Pike, Hagerstown. $6 per field or $10 for a combined ticket; $15 VIP ticket. 3. Behind the lens

Stephen Recker, pictured, will present "Rare Images of Antietam and the Photographers Who Took Them" at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, at Washington County Museum of Fine Arts, City Park, Hagerstown. $5; free for members. A catered dinner, for those who register in advance, will be offered from 6 to 7 p.m. Cost is $25; $20 for museum members. Dinner is Thursday, Oct. 11; deadline for registration is Tuesday, Oct. 9. 4. A book about Boonsboro

Doug Bast and Tim Doyle will present their book that tells Boonsboro's story through a collection of historic images at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, at  Boonsboro Free Library, 401 Potomac St., Boonsboro. A book signing will follow. 7 p.m. Free. Call 301-432-5723 or email bns@washcolibrary.org.



5. A discussion of Lincoln

Allison-Antrim Museum's annual meeting will feature Dennis Frye, speaking on "September Suspense: Lincoln's Union in Peril." A brief membership meeting will be held prior to the talk. The lecture is at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, at Allison-Antrim Museum, 365 S. Ridge Ave., Greencastle, Pa. Open to the public. Free, donations accepted.
