Fred Schnebley Brewer, 90, of Hagerstown, Md., passed away Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012, at the home of his daughter.

Born Jan. 16, 1922, in Cearfoss, Md., he was the son of the late Fred Schnebley Brewer and Leah G. Zimmerman Brewer Kalbflesh.

He retired from the Washington County Board of Education.

He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the U.S. Army 179th Infantry 45. He served his country from 1942 to 1946. He was honorably discharged. He has a WWII Victory Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Ribbon with three bronze stars, Good Conduct medal, Purple Heart, Combat Infantry Badge and American Theatre Campaign Ribbon.

He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, AMVETS Post 10, American Legion Post 0222 and Last Man’s Club.

He is survived by Gladys Brewer, his wife of 62 years; three daughters, Janet Tracy and her husband, George, of Wake Forest, N.C., Shirley Brewer of Williamsport, and Judy Eckard and her husband, Jeff, of Hagerstown; one brother, John Kalbflesh of Chewsville; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, John C. Brewer and Harold Z. Brewer.

Funeral services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd. The Rev. Dr. A. Paul Harne will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park. Graveside military honors will be provided by Washington County AMVETS Post 10 and Marine Corps League of Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m.
