James Samuel Mills, 71, of Hagerstown, Md., died Monday, Oct. 1, 2012, at his home.

Born May 2, 1941, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Clarence and Mary Viola Richardson Lowans.

He retired from the U.S. Air Force on Nov. 22, 1963.

He was a member of Washington Square United Methodist Church.

He was a member of Paralyzed Veterans of America, Moose International, The Improved Order of Red Men Tribe 84 in Williamsport, Funkstown American Legion 211 and Train Collectors Association.

He is survived by two brothers, Charles Marshall Mills of Funkstown, Md., and Jerry Leslie Lowans of Martinsburg, W.Va.; 10 nieces and nephews, Mark “Jimmy” Mills, Mike Mills, John Mills, Jerry Mills, April Mills, Keith Ashton, Holly Brady, Justin Lowans, Gabriel Lowans and Jenssa Lowans; and many great-nieces and great-nephews. 

He was preceded in death by a sister, Carole Louise Mohr; and a nephew, Charles “Butch” Mills.

Funeral services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Jerry L. Lowans will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park. Military honors will be provided by American Legion Post 42.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m.
