Catherine Caruthers Hart, 89, of Venice, Fla., passed away Sept. 29, 2012, surrounded by her family at the home of her daughter in Keedysville.

Born Feb. 24, 1923, in Irwin, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Joseph Bayard and Elizabeth Marie Maloney Caruthers.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. 

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Thomas F. Hart. 

Kate graduated from Seton Hill College and received her Master of Science degree from Catholic University.

She worked as a social worker in Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Md., and Irwin. 

Married in 1949, she and Tom lived in the Pittsburgh area, later moving to Hagerstown, and raising their family there. They retired to Venice in 1978.

She is survived by her seven children, Bridget Madigan and husband, Brian, of Redwood City, Calif., Thomas F. Hart Jr. and wife, Peggy, of Bel Air, Md., Mary Ann Reese and husband, Stephen, of Eldersburg, Md., Martin B. Hart and wife, Connie, of Upperco, Md., John M. Hart and partner, A. William Davis, of Cumberland, Md., Catherine Hershey and husband, Todd, of Keedysville, and Michael Hart and wife, Patricia, of Chatham, N.J. She has 22 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and 17 nieces and nephews.

Kate was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Venice, where she was a Eucharistic minister and a lector.

She was a member of Jacaranda Country Club. She was an avid bridge player. She was a member of the Venice chapter of College Club.

She traveled extensively, and enjoyed hunting, fishing and snow tubing. She was a rosary maker by trade.

A Mass celebrating Kate’s life will be Thursday, Oct. 4, at 11 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church in Boonsboro, Md. Funeral services and inurnment will be at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Venice at a later date.

The family requests the omission of flowers. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21742.
