Hubs stay perfect in MVAL Antietam volleyball

THURMONT, Md. — Payton Wallech had 24 kills and two blocks to lead North Hagerstown to a 25-13, 25-13, 25-11 MVAL Antietam sweep of Catoctin (3-3, 2-2) on Thursday.

Sarah Bentley had 32 assists and Emily Folk had 15 digs for the Hubs (5-1, 3-0).

JV: North, 2-0.

Smithsburg 3, Brunswick 1

BRUNSWICK, Md. — Peyton Belella had 33 assists to lead Smithsburg past Brunswick (0-7, 0-4) 25-13, 25-13, 20-25, 25-23 in an MVAL Antietam match.

Amanda Snowden had 21 kills, Haley Caudell had 10 kills and 12 service points, and Marissa Dangler added 16 digs for the Leopards (7-1, 2-1).

JV: Smithsburg, 2-1.

South 3, Urbana 1

Alisha Adkins had 17 assists and 21 service points to lead South Hagerstown to its first win of the season with a 25-13, 24-26, 25-22, 25-23 victory over Urbana.

Kendra Day had nine kills and seven digs, Elena Young had eight kills, Victoria Pearl had 11 assists and Kirsten Mohar had 23 digs and 14 service points for the Rebels (1-3).

JV: South, 2-0.

Heritage 3, Broadfording 0

Heritage Academy won its 49th straight best-of-5 match dating to the start of the 2010 season with a 25-13, 25-14, 25-8 sweep of Broadfording in the Mason Dixon Christian Conference.

The Eagles improved to 12-0 this season overall and in the conference.

Sarah Couch had six kills for the Lions (0-9, 0-9).

Calvary 3, Grace Academy 1

Heather Groves had nine kills and 11 digs for Grace Academy in a 25-20, 25-21, 13-25, 25-15 loss to Calvary Christian in an MDCC match.

Valerie Cole has 23 assists and 12 digs, Caitlin Cox had 10 kills, Gracis Buser had seven kills, Allie Cox had 11 digs and Jocelyn Quirple added 10 digs for the Knights (4-7, 4-7).

Berkeley Springs 3, Paw Paw 0

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. — Casey Solomon had 19 aces and 12 kills for Berkeley Springs in a 25-14, 25-13, 25-9 victory over Paw Paw.

Natalie Redick had 14 assists and four aces for the Indians (2-6).

JV: Berkeley Springs, 2-1.


St. Maria Goretti 2, Fort Hill 0

Kevin Proctor scored a pair of unassisted goals for Goretti in a shutout of Fort Hill.

Drew Katrina made six saves for the shutout for the Gaels (7-4-1).

Broadfording 2, Heritage 1

Andrew Grimm and Trevor Snodderly each scored to lead Broadfording past Heritage Academy in the MDCC.

Jeff Lopez added an assist for the Lions (2-7, 2-7).

David Fisler scored for the Eagles (5-5-2, 5-5-2).

Sidwell Friends 7, Saint James 1

ST. JAMES — Johnny Ludwick scored on a penalty kick for Saint James in a loss to Sidwell Friends.

Alex Wagner made 14 saves for the Saints (1-8-2).


Mercersburg Academy 4, St. Maria Goretti 1

Paige Wolny and Payton Lissette each scored twice to lead Mercersburg Academy past Goretti in an Independent-Parochial School League contest.

Emily Faust made five saves for the Blue Storm (6-1).

Lauree Lorensen scored on an assist by Claire Vietri for the Gaels, who were outshot 23-8. Megan Rock made 19 saves.

South-Hancock suspended

HANCOCK — Thursday’s matchup between South Hagerstown and Hancock was suspended 15 minutes into the game by rain, with the Rebels leading 1-0.

The game will be continued at a date to be determined.

Tori Mills scored on an assist from Brianna Strawther to put South on the board.


Waynesboro’s Cauffman qualifies for District 3

CAMP HILL, Pa. — Waynesboro freshman Erica Cauffman shot a 101 and was one of 27 girls to qualify for the District 3 tournament at Thursday’s Mid-Penn Conference tournament.

Cauffman will compete in District 3 on Oct. 5-6 at Briarwood Golf Club in York, Pa. She is the first Waynesboro freshman since Liz Breed six years ago to qualify for the girls.

Elise Manning had 12 kills and three blocks, Callie Butts had nine kills and seven digs, Paige Kitchen had 32 assists and 12 digs, and Tiffany Rohrer added 12 digs for the Hawks (9-1).


HCC 2, Northern Virginia 1

Genc Sopa and Brandon Redman each scored a goal for Hagerstown Community College in a Maryland JuCo Conference win over Northern Virginia.

Fourkoko Chaw had an assist and Chucky Kipe made 11 saves for the Hawks (8-4, 4-2).
