1. An apple a day

Canal Apple Days will be from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, and from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30, at Widmeyer Park, West High Street, Hancock. The festival includes a parade on Main Street at 11 a.m. Saturday; a fiddle and banjo contest at 12:30 p.m. Saturday; a baby contest at 3 p.m. Saturday; church service in the park and Lost in the Fifties concert Sunday. There will also be vendors, face painting and food. Call 301-678-6555.


2. A safe environment to rock out

Alternative bands will perform from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28, at Right Choice Ministries, 20204 Old Forge Road, Hagerstown. Performing are Ascension, pictured; Kalevra, A Heart's Dead Memory, Fallen Sparrow. $5. Call 301-797-8157 or email rcm@rightchoiceministries.org.


3. A festival for pets

Pet Fest will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29,Fort Ritchie Community center, 14421 Lake Royer Drive, Cascade.  Demonstrations, vendors and a pet parade. Prizes will be given to the smallest, largest, cutest, prettiest, best of show, owner/pet look alike, most unusual and best dressed. Bring a photo of your pet for the photo contest. 4. Family time

"A Nice Family Gathering" continues this weekend, at Blue Ridge Summit Pennsylvania Fire Hall, 13063 Monterey Lane, Blue Ridge Summit, Pa. During a Thanksgiving dinner, the late Dr. Lundeen comes back to tell his wife how much he loved her, something he didn't do during his life. His son is the only one who can see him and he's not thrilled about helping his father. Presented by Blue Ridge Theater Guild. Sponsored by One Mountain Foundation. 6 p.m. doors open; dinner at 7 p.m.; show at 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28, and Saturday, Sept. 29; 2 p.m. show only Saturday, Sept. 29. $40, includes buffet dinner; $25 matinee tickets. 5. It's a chili extravaganza

Chili extravaganza will be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, or until food runs out, at PondBank Community Center, 6486 Duffield Road, Chambersburg, Pa.
