Jerry A. "Jerry" Gettler, 88, passed peacefully on Thursday, Sept. 20, 2012, at his home in Hagerstown, Md.

Born Feb. 15, 1924, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was the son of the late Frederick W. and Eleanor M. Gettler.

Jerry is survived by his brother, Frederick W. Gettler of Silver Spring, Md.; son, Martin Gettler of Hendersonville, N.C.; daughter, Candace Smith of Shepherdstown, W.Va.; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and his friend and loving companion, Catherine Kerns.

Jerry was preceded in death by his brother, Joseph Gettler; and sister, Eleanor McNulty.

Jerry's career included enlistment in the New York National Guard 165th Infantry Regiment, 27th Division when he was 15 years old, and advancing into active duty during World War II, where he served as a P-38 fighter pilot with the "Satan's Angels" of the 475th Fighter Group in the Pacific Theater. Jerry earned the Air Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with two Bronze Battle Stars. The P-38 Jerry flew in New Guinea was recovered in recent years and is undergoing restoration.

Jerry was a life member of American Legion Post 42, AMVETS Post 10, Veterans of Underage Military Service, P-38 National Association and 475th Fighter Group Association.

A memorial service will be Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2012, at 1 p.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, with the Rev. James F. Hay officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.
