Hagerstown man struck by SUV at Bester Elementary

September 19, 2012

A Hagerstown man walking with a guide dog was struck by a sport utility vehicle Tuesday morning as he crossed the entrance to Bester Elementary School’s parking lot, Hagerstown Police Sgt. Mark Renner said.

Michael Hutchison, 46, of West Howard Street, was taken to Meritus Medical Center on Tuesday with a leg injury, Renner said. The service dog, a yellow Labrador named Jagger, was not injured, he said.

Hutchison checked out of the hospital Tuesday, but returned Wednesday to Meritus, where he was being admitted for a broken left leg due to the accident, Renner said.

The driver of the 1998 Lincoln Navigator was driving south on South Potomac Street around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday and turned left to enter the school parking lot, Renner said.

Hutchison has been walking north on the sidewalk along South Potomac Street and was crossing the driveway entrance closest to the intersection with Memorial Boulevard when the accident occurred, Renner said.

Renner said the driver saw Hutchison and hit the brakes. It was raining and the sports utility vehicle slid and struck Hutchison, Renner said.

The driver, Evander Sheets, 19, of Ray Street, was cited with failure to yield to a pedestrian, Renner said.
